INTERVIEW: Uros Mikic – Kinky Curly Straight

Big things have been happening at Adelaide hair salon, Kinky Curly Straight! Uros Mikic is the Creative Director who (along with the salon) is being recognised for making waves in the hairdressing industry. We were lucky enough to chat with Uros about awards, trends and what’s new at the salon.

Tell us a little about your salon, Kinky Curly Straight…

Kinky Curly Straight is an award-winning, accredited Gold Salon Select salon based in Adelaide, and led by myself – Creative Director Uros Mikic and my wife, Mojca – our creative team produces beautiful and unique work.

The salon offers a unique design and layout boasting rich opulent rococo and baroque inspired furniture to create a luxurious environment for clients to enjoy and relax. We are an exclusive brand with passionate owners and a talented team set to influence the global hairdressing industry for years to come!

We are currently the 2015 Hair Expo Australian & New Zealand Salon Business of the Year, and I am also the Creative Director of MATRIX Australia, and our senior stylist Laura is a member of the MATRIX House of Talent (HOT) Team.

Congratulations on receiving two finalist nominations for the Association of International Professional Press awards, what can you tell us about this?

The AIPP awards are one of the most prestigious awards competitions for the global hairdressing industry. Hairdressers from around the world have the opportunity to submit their creative collections and videos in any of the 5 categories, and then these collections are judged by editors/publishers of the hair trade magazines all around the world. It’s a great competition as the judges are impartial and really look at the creativity and most importantly the hair fashion and it’s relevance! Not to mention, when you enter you may be a finalist alongside the British Hairdresser of the Year, Australian Hairdresser of the Year etc, which is humbling and a huge compliment!

Where did you find inspiration for your nominated collections?

For both collections my influence was NYC (I travelled there in October 2014) and the original and individual variety I witnessed on the city streets. Urban Queens is personified by strong structures that were deconstructed to achieve softness and movement with a 1970s bohemian-inspired look.

With Streets of New York I took texture and form, creating sharp geometrical shapes and achieving a clean look, and introducing intriguing details like braids and sharp lines in the fading to make the cuts unique and bespoke for the individual.

When will the winners be announced?

The winners will be announced at the esteemed Alternative Hair Show in London on Sunday 11th October. It’s one of the most highly regarded events on the international hairdressing industry calendar.

Do you get nervous being part of awards such as this?

Yes!! It’s always nerve-racking to enter these awards and be judged by your peers or other industry influencers because you are putting your creative work and a piece of you out there alongside some of the best in the world.

With spring just around the corner, do you have any hairstyle predictions for the warmer months?

It’s about the soft, deconstructed bohemian looks. The looks have a very easy feel to them, but actually require a bit of work to get them looking just right. It’s what we can construct to then deconstruct that gives you that beautiful softness all the while keeping the shape for the whole day and night.

Think flower power hippie looks but more done up and with a softer more sophisticated feel.

Have you added any new services recently that we should know about?

Yes – we are lucky to have had a great make-up artist join our team. It’s great to have a make-up artist on board for all the formals, weddings and special long hair design our team does. We can offer our clients that extra little bit to make their special day or event just perfect.

If you could have any celebrity client who would it be?

Giselle! Love her for the trendsetter she is. And such a fashion icon to aspire to.

What is next for Uros as well as the salon?

I’m busy delivering classes around Australia; I’ve been teaching men’s and creative color classes. We are also off to Europe in October to shoot my next collection.

The salon is getting ready for the Christmas rush – I know everyone thinks it’s only December but really we feel it from September onwards, which is great. We are also celebrating our 3rd birthday at the start of September.

We are in the midst of preparing a big hair show for the Adelaide Make-up & Hair Expo held on Sunday 27 September. Expect some amazingly fabulous hair from our team.

What is your advice for someone who is thinking about hairdressing as a career?

You do need to love this industry and being a hairstylist. It is long hours on your feet, dealing with clients, who can sometimes not be the nicest. But in turn you get to make a change in people’s lives and not many careers can do that.

Make sure you take advantage of the variety of career options the hairdressing industry has on offer to ensure you have an interesting career growth and contact stimulation and personal development. This industry truly has amazing pathways, from working in the salon, working as a session stylist on photoshoots and fashion week, to being an educator or managing and even owning your own business.

The sky is the limit if you are willing to put in the hours and passion.
