Winter Hair Masks

Winter is officially here and it is time to give your hair some extra nourishment and moisture to combat the frizzies and dullness the cold weather brings.

There is nothing like a hair treatment to revitalise your hair, and a good hair mask will not only encourage healthy locks, but make styling much easier too.

Thin hair, thick hair, curly or straight, here is my list of favourite hair masks which are in a range of different prices to suit any budget.

Happy Campers (RRP $25.95) from Evo is suited to summer with it’s sun protection, however just like with our skin our hair can benefit from sun protection all year round. Evo is a down to earth brand which is made in Australia, and some of the product descriptions will make you smile – especially this one which I will not repeat here!

Moisturing with a yummy-licious scent, just apply to damp or dry hair and leave in. No sulphate, parabens or propylene glycol.

Two products from Wella that will give you an intensive treatment at home are the SP Hydrate Mask (RRP $34.00) and the SP Repair Mask. (RRP $34.00)

sp-hydrate-mask

Both are beautiful products but if I had to choose a fave it would be the Hydrate Mask because it has a pretty perfume scent. Two creamy masks that are of salon quality, just shampoo your hair, give it a quick towel dry and pop the chosen one on for 5 minutes before rinsing.

From salon to supermarket, budget beauties can try the Butter Mask from Garnier Fructis (RRP $10.85). This is another five minute mask which does look a little bit like butter…ok, it looks like margarine but not as thick or greasy.

garnier butter mask

It contains Olive Oil, Avocado Oil and Shea Oil which does smooth out your hair and make an impact. For this one I would only use if you have extra dry or damaged hair, it would probably be a bit rich for fine or oily hair.

Burt’s Bees is a brand of natural skin and haircare, and their hair treatments are a little bit of earthy goodness in a tube. There is the Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment (RRP $19.95) which is quite unique as you apply to hair BEFORE shampooing.

avacado butter

One tablespoon is all you need and after 15 minutes you shampoo as normal. 99.33% natural, this treatment has ingredients like avocado oil, sweet almond oil, rosemary leaf oil and olive oil…can you imagine how lovely it is to use?

The Hair Repair Deep Conditioner (RRP $19.95) from Burt’s Bees is also divine, it has a slightly citrusy scent and contains Shea and Grapefruit. This one is 98.05% natural and it is applied after shampooing.

Two minutes of waiting and then rinse thoroughly. Your hair will feel silky smooth and the essential oils will give it some life and shine.

While we are on the subject of natural haircare, Al’chemy has their Intensive Moisture Vitamin Masque (RRP $17.95) which is beautifully rich with a range of organic ingredients. Australian made and owned, this is a brand worth supporting – and this product really works.

alchemy mask

A heavy duty mask that will help aid in your hair’s recovery, I left it on overnight as suggested on the tube and my hair has never felt so soft as it did upon washing the next morning.

If you love that coconut smell, Trilogy’s Botanical Moisture Masque (RRP $24.95) is for you. Your hair will be left smelling coconuty and feeling smooth and lush.

Another natural pick, there is Marshmallow extract (the plant not the lolly), Olive Oils, Vitamin E, Green Tea, Shea Butter and Certified Organic Rosehip Oil…phew, that was a mouthful, but just imagine how they all combine together for a beautiful treatment.

Redken Extreme Strength Builder comes in a unisex blue tub and at 250ml it is a bit bigger than some of the other picks. Recommended for distressed hair, it is a good choice for colour treated hair that needs some extra love and care. It has a nice scent and a creamy texture and is applied after shampooing for 5-15 minutes before rinsing.

redken gold

I’m a Redken fan and this one didn’t disappoint. Also try the Redken All Soft Heavy Cream (RRP $34.00), a gold pot of rich treatment for dry, brittle hair. Curly haired girls rejoice!!

From Matrix Biolage is theย Colorcarethรฉrapie Delicate Care Masque (RRP $28.00) which is designed for colour treated and damaged hair. If you have over bleached or gone from one extreme to another this is a soothing and gentle option.

matrix biolage

It will also help to fight the fade, and your hair colour will be that little bit longer lasting. Use weekly and leave on for 3-5 minutes. I would suggest using in conjunction with the other Delicate Care products in the range for best results.

For hair that is on the normal to damaged spectrum, Sebastian Professional has a little tube of hair help with their Hydre (RRP $35.00).

hydre

Personally I find the Sebastian products work exceptionally well with straightening tools, and Hydre does seem to give hair that extra moisture required before styling. Safe for colour treated hair, leave for 3-5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

You can stop being afraid of vibrant colour with Pureology, a brand who is dedicated to colour care. Shiny reds and richs browns will last longer and now your hair can be softer too, with the HydraWhip (RRP $49.00) mask. 150ml of organic botanicals, HydraWhip is 100% vegan so it is guilt free.

hydrawhip
It is described as a souffle (and I couldn’t have said it better myself so will stick with that), there are lovelies like avocado, jojoba and mango butters and green tea. A quick one, this takes 2-5 minutes to work its magic…and it comes with a little comb too.

L’Oreal Professionel is a popular brand in many salons and it is recommended by hairdressers for a reason – it works. Fiberceutic Replenishing Mask (RRP $34.00) has been dubbed “botox for your hair” and contains Intra-Cylane, a special treatment that works to protect the hair fiber and is for hair that needs protecting and soothing.

fiberceutic

Damaged hair will soak up the ingredients after a few minutes before you rinse thoroughly. If you open the tub for a smell it has that salon scent to it, and after using you will almost feel like you have had a professional treatment at the hairdressers (minus the scalp massage!) The Mask is available in two versions, for thick or thin hair.

If you are a regular reader you will know I love my Kiehl’s, and this time my hair has been drinking up the Sunflower Color Preserving Deep Recovery Pak (RRP $56.00). Coloured, stressed or environmentally damaged hair will be tamed with this silicone free conditioning treatment.

kiehls sunflower treatment

Loads of vitamins and essential fatty acids are within, not only will your hair be more manageable in the short term, but it will also be protected against future damage. After shampooing leave on your hair for at least 3 minutes before rinsing.

Back to the supermarket for my last two brands, and while I generally like to stick with salon brands for my unruly hair it really does depend on your personal haircare needs.

So let’s take a look at Dove‘s Damage Therapy, this is my first adventure into the world of Dove haircare and if you like their body products (which I do) then I think you will also be happy with their masks.

colour dove

We have the Intensive Repair Treatment Mask (RRP $8.79) which has vitamins and fibre protection, and used once a week for 3-5 minutes you will certainly notice your hair is stronger and smoother. For coloured hair there is the Colour Care Treatment Mask (RRP $8.79), it isn’t quite as moisturising as the Repair Treatment Mask but still works well for chemically coloured hair.

Stockist: 1800 061 027

Pantene PRO -V have their Clinicare treatments, you can get a pack of five individual treatments (RRP $19.99) which are great to have in your bag. Just the right size for travel or washing on the go, these are made to strengthen cuticles and prevent further damage.

clinicare

These treatments stay on the hair for 3-5 minutes and then rinsed off. If you prefer your Pantene PRO-V in a tub, their Nature Fusion Intensive Penetrating Treatment (RRP $6.99) is for dry, weakened hair and has a blend of “naturally derived plant extracts”. The best thing about this product is your hair looks nice and shiny afterwards!

So many beautiful choices – enjoy! If you have tried any of the above products or have a favourite hair mask I’d love to hear what you think. xx

  1. Hi!

Great post. Leave in conditioners are great for taming frizz, you can also use them as styling aid to tame curls.

    Love,
    The Al’chemy team.

  2. Hi B&L,

Loved the post. It really is so important to use a good hair mask in winter-I’ve really noticed a change in my hair (for the better!) since using a mask more regularly. Much more hydrated and shiny!

  3. Hair masks always make my hair look and feel better. I’ve used some of these and you’ve inspired me to try the rest of them.

  4. Hi i find it all a bit confusing, i really need a mask that will help build up my hair apparently i dont need to be using a moisturising on, but one that will build it up, make it stronger healthy etc as its very fine, and i am trying to grow it, but i dont really know what kind of mask that would be??? they all sound lovely but is there one specificially for building up tired, fine 40 + year old hair ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hi Karyn,
I’d probably use the Fiberceutic from Loreal if I were you, it comes in a version especially for fine hair so that would be my pick!
      Hope this helps
      Lace xx

  5. In my 70th year I have very curly hair and it needs something at
the back to keep it under control otherwise it gets very frizzy whenever we get a warm day, (I live in Nth Qld)

  6. That was really interesting about all the hair products. There are quite a few in there I would love to try now. Written down the ones I will have a look at. Burts Bees and Dove for sure.

  7. i definitely have learned a lot from these products. I have used a hair mask twice this winter and it worked reasonably well. I noticed the difference it made to my hair and that pleased me no end. Out of these , i would probably go for the ones without the coconut smell , as i find it too strong for me.

  8. Ive tried the ‘Trilogy’ hair mask and is working wonders! I have very dry, curly hair which is also coloured. Best hair treatment yet and ive always used salon! Also in conjusction with goast milk shampoo and conditioner… my 40 year old hair has never looked better!
